Missions

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
-1 John 3:17-18

The United Church of Cookeville joyfully and actively responds to the needs of the community and the world. We send 10% of our budget forward to the Office of the Church’s Wider Mission for national and international relief. We allocate 5% of our budget to six local programs throughout the year.

Local
United Church of Cookeville actively supports three local organizations:

Helping Hands of Putnam County, which helps families and transients in Putnam County with food, utilities, medical expenses, and rent. A suggestion for Helping Hands: when shopping for the week, add the dry ingredients for one meal for another family.

Cookeville/Putnam County Animal Shelter

Genesis House, which provides shelter and support for victims of sexual and domestic violence.

Inside our front door, you will find three tubs for collecting your gifts. This year, in addition to our support of these three organizations, we also supported tornado relief, Habitat for Humanity, Teens Need Training, New Ministries for backpacks for the homeless, sponsorship of a boy in India and Shepherd’s Fund. We also spent man hours on the postal food drive, Great American Bake Sale, Windows on the World, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, earning money for Share Our Strength and Heifer International. The Souper Bowl earned money for the Animal Shelter. We marched in the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. All in all we had a very good year for a small congregation.

Worldwide
We also support Heifer International, a worldwide effort to end hunger and care for the earth. Through the collection of quarters in our Quarter Tube we have provided numerous sheep to needy families around the world.

These collection areas remind us daily to share God’s blessings with all.
